TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3: Black Temple Stays Unnerfed, Marks of the Illidari Get a Major Update

TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 arrives on August 27, 2026 at 3:00 PM PDT, bringing two of the most iconic raids in Burning Crusade history to the Anniversary realms: Black Temple and Hyjal Summit.

This phase is also a little different from the earlier raid releases. Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair, Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep all arrived in their already-nerfed states during the Anniversary progression. Black Temple, however, is being treated much more like the original raid.

That means guilds preparing for Phase 3 should not assume Black Temple will be another straightforward progression tier. The raid is expected to retain most of its original difficulty, while Blizzard is making some quality-of-life changes around consumables and gearing.

If you are preparing for TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3, now is the time to finish your attunements, stock up on consumables and make sure your raid group is ready for Black Temple and Hyjal Summit.

Black Temple and Hyjal Summit unlock at the same time, giving guilds two major Tier 6 raids to work through from the beginning of Phase 3.

Zul'Aman is not part of the initial Phase 3 launch. There has been plenty of speculation about when the ten-player raid could arrive, but unless Blizzard confirms a specific date, those estimates should be treated as speculation rather than a release schedule.

Black Temple Is Staying Largely Unnerfed

The biggest story going into Phase 3 is not actually a new item or system. It is the difficulty of Black Temple.

Earlier raids in the TBC Anniversary progression launched with tuning based on later versions of the original Burning Crusade raids. That made the first several tiers considerably more accessible than their original releases.

Black Temple is different.

Blizzard has not announced the same broad difficulty reductions for Black Temple. The raid is therefore expected to retain much more of its original challenge, with only limited tuning changes such as adjustments involving Mother Shahraz.

For guilds that remember the original Burning Crusade, this should feel much closer to the raid they remember.

That matters because Black Temple is a significant step up from simply farming the earlier Tier 5 raids. Guilds should expect stricter mechanics, more demanding positioning and several encounters where sloppy execution can quickly turn into a wipe.

Black Temple Boss Order

Black Temple contains nine main encounters, ending with Illidan Stormrage.

Order

Boss

What to Expect

1

High Warlord Naj'entus

An early encounter that tests positioning, timing and raid awareness.

2

Supremus

A movement-heavy fight where avoiding dangerous areas remains critical.

3

Shade of Akama

Add control and target priority become the main focus.

4

Teron Gorefiend

A mechanics-heavy encounter that can punish players who are unfamiliar with their assigned role.

5

Gurtogg Bloodboil

Heavy damage and stacking mechanics put pressure on the raid and healers.

6

Reliquary of Souls

A three-phase encounter that changes how the raid approaches damage, healing and resource management.

7

Mother Shahraz

Shadow damage and positioning make this one of the more demanding encounters in the raid.

8

The Illidari Council

Four bosses must be managed simultaneously, creating one of the raid's most chaotic encounters.

9

Illidan Stormrage

The final encounter and one of the defining raid fights of The Burning Crusade.

The final stretch of Black Temple is where many guilds will find out whether their preparation was actually good enough.

Illidan Stormrage and the Warglaives

Illidan Stormrage is the final boss of Black Temple and, for many players, the main reason the raid is so iconic.

He also drops the legendary Warglaives of Azzinoth.

The two glaives are separate legendary weapons, meaning obtaining one does not automatically give you the other. Guilds chasing the complete set should therefore be prepared for a long farming process.

Illidan himself is also a demanding encounter. The fight contains several phases with different mechanics, including the infamous Flames of Azzinoth phase and the later stages of the encounter.

Anyone preparing an Illidan progression group should make sure every player understands the encounter before stepping into the raid. Black Temple may be nostalgic, but nostalgia does not make the mechanics disappear.

Black Temple Attunement Is Still Required

One of the biggest differences between modern World of Warcraft and TBC Classic Anniversary is the return of raid attunements.

Black Temple is not simply a raid you can walk into without preparation. Players need to complete the required quest progression before gaining access.

The attunement process connects several pieces of TBC content, including Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep and Hyjal Summit.

The general progression includes:

  1. Complete the required quest chain beginning with the Tablets of Baa'ri progression.

  2. Complete the necessary objectives involving The Arcatraz.

  3. Defeat Lady Vashj in Serpentshrine Cavern.

  4. Defeat Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep.

  5. Progress through the Vials of Eternity questline.

  6. Enter Hyjal Summit and defeat Rage Winterchill.

  7. Continue the remaining quest objectives leading toward Black Temple.

  8. Complete the final steps to receive the Medallion of Karabor and gain access to Black Temple.

The good news for players with multiple characters is that the Anniversary progression includes account-wide attunement benefits, allowing alts to avoid repeating the entire process after a main character has completed it.

That makes finishing the attunement on at least one character before Phase 3 starts particularly valuable.

Marks of the Illidari Get a Useful Upgrade

One of the more interesting quality-of-life changes coming with Phase 3 involves Marks of the Illidari.

The basic Marks of the Illidari system is already familiar to TBC players. The marks drop from trash mobs in high-level raid content and can be turned in for useful rewards once the appropriate reputation requirements have been met.

The Phase 3 update makes them considerably more interesting for players concerned about consumable costs.

The PTR version of the system allows Marks of the Illidari to be exchanged for Haste Potions and Destruction Potions, alongside the existing flask-related rewards.

The current test version allows:

Reward

Cost

Haste Potions

10 Marks

Destruction Potions

10 Marks

The exact implementation is something players should continue watching as Phase 3 approaches, but if the system launches in its current form, Marks of the Illidari could become an important source of consumables for active raiders.

Reputation Is the Real Requirement

There is an important catch.

Having a pile of Marks of the Illidari is not enough by itself. Players still need to meet the required reputation conditions to access the relevant rewards.

That means players preparing for Phase 3 should not completely ignore their reputation progress.

The marks themselves can be collected while running content such as:

  • Serpentshrine Cavern

  • Tempest Keep

  • Black Temple

  • Hyjal Summit

This makes them relatively easy to accumulate once you are actively raiding.

The reputation requirements are the part that can slow you down.

If you plan to use the new potion exchanges regularly, getting the necessary reputations sorted before you start burning through raid consumables is a smart move.

What Else Is Coming With Phase 3?

Black Temple and Hyjal Summit are the obvious headline features, but they are not the only additions arriving with Phase 3.

Netherwing Reputation

The Netherwing reputation grind becomes available, opening up another major reputation progression path in Shadowmoon Valley.

Players interested in the iconic Netherwing drakes should prepare for the associated daily quests and reputation grind.

Epic Gems

Phase 3 also introduces Epic Gems, giving players another major upgrade option for their gear and sockets.

For raiders looking to maximize their performance in Black Temple and Hyjal Summit, socket optimization becomes even more important once the new gems enter the economy.

Arena Season 3

Arena Season 3 is also part of the Phase 3 progression, although its exact timing follows the regional PvP schedule rather than necessarily matching the raid launch hour.

PvP players should therefore keep an eye on the regional Arena schedule rather than assuming everything unlocks simultaneously.

Zul'Aman

Zul'Aman is the major piece that is not arriving with the initial Phase 3 launch.

There has been plenty of community speculation about a release several weeks into the phase, with many estimates placing it around seven or eight weeks after Phase 3 begins.

Until Blizzard confirms an official date, however, there is no reason to treat those estimates as guaranteed.

How to Prepare for TBC Phase 3

If you want to be ready when Black Temple and Hyjal Summit open, there are a few things worth finishing before August 27.

Finish your attunement. This is the obvious one. Do not wait until raid night to discover that you are missing a quest from a chain that requires multiple raid clears.

Prepare consumables. Black Temple is not expected to receive the same broad nerf treatment as earlier raids, so guilds should expect consumable usage to matter.

Work on reputation. If you want to take advantage of the updated Marks of the Illidari rewards, make sure your reputation requirements are already handled.

Prepare your gear. Finish your current Tier 5 progression and make sure your character is ready for Tier 6 content.

Stock up on gold. Epic Gems, consumables, enchants and other Phase 3 materials are likely to see plenty of demand when the new raids open.

Know your raid role. Black Temple has several encounters where understanding the mechanics matters more than simply having decent gear.

TBC Phase 3: What Players Should Expect

TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3 looks like a deliberate change of pace from the earlier raid tiers.

The previous raids gave players a relatively forgiving path through progression, while Black Temple is being allowed to retain much more of its original identity.

That should make the first few weeks of Phase 3 especially interesting.

At the same time, Blizzard is making the surrounding gearing and consumable economy somewhat easier to manage. The updated Marks of the Illidari system could reduce some of the pressure around potion costs, while Epic Gems give players another way to improve their characters.

The result is a phase where the raids can remain challenging without making every part of the preparation process unnecessarily painful.

TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3: Final Thoughts

August 27 is the date to have circled if you are playing TBC Classic Anniversary. Black Temple and Hyjal Summit arrive together, and Black Temple is entering the Anniversary progression without the kind of sweeping nerfs that softened the earlier raid tiers.

For raiders, that means preparation matters.

Finish your Black Temple attunement, get your character ready, stock your consumables and make sure your guild knows what it is walking into. If the current Marks of the Illidari changes make it to live servers, they should also make the ongoing consumable grind a little easier.

Black Temple has always been one of the defining raids in The Burning Crusade. With Phase 3 keeping most of its difficulty intact, this Anniversary version has a chance to deliver one of the more memorable raid progression periods of the entire TBC Classic cycle.
