AION 2 Dungeons Guide: Types, Rewards and How to Progress

Dungeons play a major role in AION 2 progression, but not every instance serves the same purpose. Some help you upgrade your equipment while leveling, others reward enhancement materials and currency, and the most demanding endgame activities provide resources that are difficult to obtain elsewhere. Knowing which activities to prioritize can save a considerable amount of time and help you develop your character more efficiently.

The important thing is to look beyond the dungeon's completion reward. Entry requirements, weekly limits, Odyle Energy costs, difficulty settings, and reward progression all influence whether a particular run is worth your time.

This AION 2 dungeons guide explains how the main dungeon systems work, which rewards they provide, and how to approach them from your first Expedition to the highest endgame difficulties. The recommendations focus on the Global version, as dungeon availability and requirements can differ between regional versions of the game.

AION 2 Dungeons at a Glance

AION 2 has several types of instanced content, alongside smaller exploration objectives that provide permanent character progression. Each should have a different place in your routine.

Expedition Dungeons: Your Main Source of Equipment Progression

Expeditions are the traditional group dungeons in AION 2. They are built around boss encounters and are an important part of equipment progression, particularly as you approach level 45 and begin preparing for more demanding content.

Most Expeditions follow a three-boss structure. You fight two intermediate bosses before reaching the final encounter, although some routes allow you to skip earlier bosses. Doing so can shorten a run, but it may also reduce the rewards available from the final reward Cube.

Expeditions support two difficulties: Exploration and Conquest. Exploration is the more accessible option, with lower entry requirements and simpler encounters. Conquest introduces harder boss mechanics and higher Gear Score requirements, but it also offers stronger rewards. Conquest is especially relevant once your character is properly equipped for endgame progression.

Current AION 2 Expedition Requirements

The following table covers the six Expedition dungeons available in the current Global version at the time of writing.

Vakron Sky Island

1,400

2 to 5

2,100

These are Exploration requirements. Conquest has higher requirements, so unlocking an Expedition does not necessarily mean you are ready for its more difficult version.

As your Gear Score improves, choose dungeons based on the quality of their rewards rather than simply running the easiest available instance. For example, Vakron Sky Island becomes an important target around the 1,400 Gear Score milestone because its Conquest rewards can offer better value for your progression resources than lower-tier alternatives.

If you are still working toward the requirements for harder content, read our AION 2 Gear Score Guide for a more focused upgrade strategy.

Expedition Reward Cubes and Odyle Energy

Defeating the final boss unlocks a reward Cube containing your personal loot. Depending on the dungeon, rewards can include equipment, Kinah, Enhancement Stones, Silentium, Soul Codex items, and other progression materials. Defeating more bosses can improve the rewards available, making full clears worthwhile when you can complete them efficiently.

Opening the Cube consumes Odyle Energy. This distinction matters because completing an instance and collecting its rewards are separate decisions. You should consider the value of the available loot before spending your energy, especially when several other activities compete for the same resource.

Expeditions also feature a Guaranteed Reward progression system. Repeatedly opening eligible Cubes advances the relevant counter, eventually allowing you to select a listed reward instead of relying entirely on random drops. This can help you plan for a specific equipment upgrade rather than farming indefinitely without a clear target.

Conquest also features cumulative weekly progression and a shared clear counter with Transcendence. Keep an eye on these systems when planning repeated runs, because the value of additional completions depends on more than just the boss loot.

Daily Dungeons: Make Every Weekly Entry Count

Despite their name, Daily Dungeons are governed by a weekly entry system in the current Global version. You receive 14 attempts per server each week, shared between the available Daily Dungeon activities. The weekly reset takes place on Wednesday in the current Global schedule.

These are short, solo instances in which your final score determines the quality of your rewards. Completing a run is only part of the objective. Efficient movement, strong damage, and good use of the available dungeon effects can make a meaningful difference to your final score.

There are three main Daily Dungeons, each aimed at a different progression need.

Daily Dungeon

Main objective

Main reward focus

Daeva Bio-Research Base

Defeat as many enemies as possible

Enhancement Stones

Odylium Repository

Collect Odyle Energy from unstable Odylium

Growth Pet Chests

Crobakhi's Secret Depository

Collect coins throughout the instance

Bound Kinah

Daeva Bio-Research Base is particularly useful when equipment enhancement is holding back your Gear Score. Since the rewards scale with performance, improving your score can provide substantially more materials from the same entry.

Odylium Repository is a better choice when pet progression is your current priority, while Crobakhi's Secret Depository is useful when you need additional Bound Kinah. Because the attempts are shared, spending an entry on one activity means giving up the opportunity to use it on another.

The best strategy is to identify what your character needs before using the weekly allowance. A player struggling to meet an equipment requirement may benefit more from Enhancement Stones than from additional pet resources, while an established character may have different priorities.

You can arrange these activities alongside the rest of your routine using our AION 2 Daily and Weekly Checklist.

Transcendence: Endgame Dungeons for Arcana

Transcendence is one of the most important dungeon systems for advanced character development. These level 45 group instances feature four difficulty stages, each with higher requirements and additional encounter modifiers.

In the current Global version, the two available Transcendence dungeons are Deus Research Base and Shattered Arkanis. Both follow the same Gear Score progression.

Transcendence stage

Required Gear Score

Stage 1

1,600

Stage 2

1,900

Stage 3

2,200

Stage 4

2,500

The dungeons are designed for parties of two to five players. Each contains three bosses, but reaching the final encounter requires meeting a progression threshold by defeating bosses and additional enemies. Unlike some Expedition routes, you cannot simply ignore everything between encounters and expect to progress directly to the final boss.

Higher stages introduce additional effects that change how you approach encounters. These can make certain enemy groups more dangerous, create hazardous zones, or increase the difficulty of boss mechanics. Reaching the minimum Gear Score is therefore only the first requirement. Your build, defensive capabilities, and ability to handle the relevant mechanics still matter.

The main reason to prioritize Transcendence is its reward structure. Opening the end-of-dungeon Cube costs 40 Odyle Energy, and the available rewards include Arcana and other valuable materials. Arcana is particularly important because it supports further skill development beyond the progression available from regular skill points and the Daevanion system.

If you are approaching the endgame, the most sensible approach is to start at the highest stage you can reliably clear, then move upward as your equipment and character build improve. A consistent clear at a lower stage is generally more useful than repeatedly failing a stage that you are not yet equipped to handle.

Nightmare: Solo Boss Challenges and Phantasmal Fragments

Nightmare is a solo boss challenge rather than a conventional dungeon with a full route. You select an available boss and challenge level, then attempt to defeat it as efficiently as possible. Each regular boss has ten challenge levels, with more demanding encounters offering greater rewards.

Progression is built around unlocking additional encounters and pushing through increasingly difficult versions of the available bosses. As you advance, new targets become available, creating a separate progression path from Expeditions and Transcendence.

Nightmare has its own attempt counter and does not use Odyle Energy. In the current Global system, it begins with 14 attempts, recovers two attempts daily, and can store up to 30 additional attempts. This makes it useful to plan around your schedule rather than treating it as a strict once-a-week activity.

The primary currency is Phantasmal Fragments, which can be spent in the Nightmare Trade Shop. Its inventory includes progression materials, consumables, cosmetics, wings, and other rewards. First clears and repeat clears provide different rewards, so progressing through new challenge levels can be particularly valuable.

Your practical goal should be to reach the highest level you can defeat consistently. Once a particular level becomes manageable, you can work toward the next one or repeat cleared encounters when you need more currency. Instant Clear Tickets can also help with farming previously cleared levels, although the way you use them matters if seasonal ranking is important to you.

Nightmare is therefore a useful addition to an endgame routine, especially for players who want another source of progression without depending on a group for every run.

Ascension Trial: Score-Based Solo Progression

Ascension Trial is another level 45 solo activity, but its structure is different from Nightmare. Instead of fighting individual bosses through a challenge ladder, you clear a short dungeon with multiple enemy encounters and a final boss. Your score depends on your performance during the run.

The current Global version features Nightmare Altar with four difficulty levels. Each difficulty increases the equipment requirement and makes the run more demanding by raising the final boss level and reducing the available time or death allowance.

Normal

1,500

2,000

Ascension Trial is particularly important to plan carefully because it has a separate weekly entry counter. You receive three default attempts per week, and an entry is consumed when you enter the dungeon, even if you fail to complete it. This makes it less forgiving than an activity where you can simply retry until you succeed.

Your reward depends on your final score rather than completion alone. The reward pool includes Enhancement Stones, Growth Pet Chests, Amplify Stone Fragments, and Ascension Binding Chests.

Before entering a higher difficulty, make sure your character can handle its damage requirements and mechanics. An upgrade that improves your clear speed or survivability can be more valuable than immediately spending an attempt on the highest available difficulty. Once your build is ready, you can gradually push for better scores and seasonal ranking rewards.

Sealed Dungeons: Permanent Character Progression

Sealed Dungeons are compact, single-player instances found throughout the world. Unlike repeatable Expedition farming, these are primarily one-time objectives that reward you for exploring and completing previously undiscovered locations.

Their rewards include Daevanion Points, Daevanion Crystals, Enhancement Stones, and other useful progression materials, depending on the activity and current version. These rewards are valuable because they can contribute to permanent character development rather than simply providing equipment that you may replace later.

The biggest mistake is leaving too many Sealed Dungeons unfinished and expecting to catch up much later. They are easier to incorporate into your route when you are already traveling through a relevant zone. Completing nearby objectives while leveling can reduce the amount of backtracking required later.

You can find more information about their rewards, along with Empyrean Traces and Strongholds, in our AION 2 Empyrean Traces, Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds Guide.

Strongholds: An Important Source of Belt Enhancement Materials

Strongholds are open-world combat objectives rather than traditional instanced dungeons. They are located across faction territories, with each completed Stronghold providing a set of rewards that can contribute to permanent character progression.

One of the most important rewards is the Noble Belt Enhance Scroll, which is used to enhance the corresponding belt equipment. Strongholds can also provide Kinah, Lesser Manastones, and additional loot. Because these objectives are one-time clears in the current progression system, you cannot rely on repeating the same Stronghold indefinitely for more scrolls.

Your home faction's territory is generally the easiest place to begin. Accessing enemy territory involves additional risk and may require a Space-Time Rift, so plan those objectives around the relevant access conditions. Completing Strongholds across both territories can be worthwhile when you are looking to maximize your available belt enhancement materials.

For characters that have reached level 45, Strongholds are worth including in a broader progression plan rather than overlooking them in favor of repeatable dungeons alone.

Which AION 2 Dungeons Should You Prioritize?

The best dungeon route depends on your level and what is currently preventing your character from progressing.

While leveling from 1 to 29, focus on the Main Story and use accessible Expeditions or nearby Sealed Dungeons when their rewards justify the time. Do not interrupt every quest route to clear optional content across the map. Finishing the campaign efficiently puts you in a better position to begin endgame preparation.

From level 30 to 44, add Daily Dungeons to your weekly routine. Prioritize Enhancement Stones when you need equipment upgrades, Growth Pet Chests when pet progression matters, and Bound Kinah when you need more currency. Continue completing useful one-time objectives when they fit naturally into your route.

At level 45, begin working through endgame requirements. Expeditions help you improve your equipment, while Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds supply useful progression materials that should not be ignored. At this stage, your main goal is to build a character capable of meeting higher Gear Score requirements without wasting enhancement resources.

Around 1,400 Gear Score and beyond, review your Conquest options and start targeting Expeditions that provide better value for your current equipment level. As you reach the appropriate thresholds, incorporate Transcendence for Arcana progression. Nightmare and Ascension Trial offer additional solo rewards, but their different entry systems mean they should be planned separately.

Once your character is established, build your weekly plan around reset timers and limited attempts. Use valuable entries before they expire, spend Odyle Energy where it provides the best return, and choose reward types according to your current needs instead of repeating activities automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dungeons should I do first in AION 2?

Begin with accessible Expeditions while leveling and complete worthwhile Sealed Dungeons along your quest route. From level 30, include Daily Dungeons in your weekly plan. At level 45, gradually transition into Conquest Expeditions, Transcendence, Nightmare, and Ascension Trial as your equipment and build allow.

What is the difference between Exploration and Conquest?

Exploration is the more accessible Expedition difficulty, with lower requirements and simpler encounters. Conquest increases the challenge and generally provides better rewards. You should move into Conquest when your character can meet its requirements and handle the mechanics consistently.

How does Odyle Energy work in AION 2 dungeons?

Odyle Energy is spent to open reward Cubes after eligible activities, including Expeditions and Transcendence. It is therefore important to consider whether a particular run offers rewards that justify the cost. Plan your energy usage alongside other activities that draw from the same resource.

Are Nightmare and Ascension Trial the same activity?

No. Nightmare focuses on individual boss encounters with multiple challenge levels, while Ascension Trial is a short, score-based solo dungeon. They have separate attempt systems and different reward structures, so progress in one does not replace the other.

Can I repeat Sealed Dungeons for more rewards?

Sealed Dungeons are primarily one-time completion objectives. Their purpose is to provide progression resources from locations you have not yet completed, unlike repeatable activities where you continue farming the same encounter for additional rewards.

What is the best way to improve my Gear Score for harder dungeons?

Focus on meaningful equipment upgrades, Enhancement Stones, and progression activities that provide resources for your next target. Improving Gear Score is important, but your build and combat performance also affect your ability to complete difficult encounters. Use the AION 2 Gear Score Guide to plan your next milestones.

Final Thoughts

Dungeon progression in AION 2 becomes much easier when you understand what each activity is designed to provide. Expeditions are central to equipment progression, Daily Dungeons help maintain your resource supply, Transcendence supports advanced skill development, and Nightmare and Ascension Trial provide additional solo progression. Sealed Dungeons and Strongholds round out the picture with important rewards from one-time objectives.

Rather than trying to complete everything without a plan, focus on the rewards your character needs next. Manage weekly entries carefully, pay attention to Gear Score requirements, and avoid spending valuable resources on activities that no longer match your progression goals.
