How to Get Dawncrests in WoW Midnight Season 1
Dawncrests are the only upgrade currency in WoW Midnight Season 1. If you want better gear, you need them. This guide covers every farming method available, explains how the weekly cap works, and breaks down which Dawncrest tier matches which type of content.
What Are Dawncrests in Midnight?
Dawncrests replaced both Valorstones and the old seasonal crests from The War Within. You no longer need to manage two currencies at the same time. Every gear upgrade in Midnight Season 1 costs Dawncrests, and only Dawncrests.
There are five tiers, each tied to a different level of content difficulty:
Adventurer Dawncrest
Veteran Dawncrest
Champion Dawncrest
Hero Dawncrest
Myth Dawncrest
The tier of crest you need depends on the upgrade track your gear is on, not just the item level it sits at. Two pieces of gear at a similar ilvl can require different Dawncrest types if they came from different content tracks.
Dawncrest Farming Methods
The fastest way to farm Dawncrests is to match your content to the tier you actually need. Running Mythic+ when you still need Adventurer Dawncrests is a waste of time. Start at your current progression level and move up as your gear improves.
Here is a full breakdown of which activities reward each tier:
Adventurer Dawncrests
Best for players starting out or gearing a new character.
Repeatable outdoor events
Outdoor treasures
Tier 4 Delves
Heroic dungeons
LFR raid bosses
Veteran Dawncrests
A step up from outdoor content, still accessible without a premade group.
Repeatable outdoor events
Heroic seasonal dungeons
Raid Finder raids
Trovehunter's Bounty (Tiers 4-5)
Delves (Tiers 5-6)
Champion Dawncrests
Requires entry-level Mythic+ keys and Normal raid clears.
Weekly outdoor events
Mythic+ keys (+2 to +3)
Normal raids
Delves (Tiers 7-10)
Trovehunter's Bounty (Tiers 6-7)
Hero Dawncrests
Mid-to-high endgame content. Requires a reliable group.
Heroic raids
Mythic+ keys (+4 to +8)
Trovehunter's Bounty (Tier 8+)
Myth Dawncrests
Top-end progression only. No shortcuts here.
Mythic raids
Mythic+ keys (+9 and higher)
Dawncrest Types and Item Level Ranges
Each Dawncrest tier covers a specific item level range. The tracks overlap slightly, which gives you a smoother transition between gear tiers instead of a hard wall.
Dawncrest Type Required Upgrade Track Item Level Range Adventurer Adventurer 220-237 Adventurer + Veteran Veteran 233-250 Veteran + Champion Champion 246-263 Champion + Hero Hero 259-276 Hero + Myth Myth 272-289
The overlap also means that at certain points in your progression you will need crests from two different tiers to continue upgrading the same piece of gear.
Dawncrest Weekly Cap
Each Dawncrest type has a weekly cap of 100. That means you can earn up to 100 Adventurer, 100 Veteran, 100 Champion, 100 Hero, and 100 Myth Dawncrests per week. They are tracked separately.
If you miss a week or take a break from the game, the cap stacks. You do not permanently lose out on progress. The system calculates how many weeks have passed and raises your farmable cap accordingly.
Example:
Week 1: cap is 100 per tier
Week 4: cap is 400 per tier (four weeks stacked)
You can check your current cap and weekly progress in the in-game currency tab. Each Dawncrest type is listed individually.
How to Exchange Dawncrests
Two NPCs handle gear upgrades and crest exchanges. Both are located in Silvermoon City at coordinates /way #2393 48.6 61.7.
Cuzolth - Gear upgrade vendor
Vaskarn - Dawncrest exchange vendor
Vaskarn lets you convert lower-tier Dawncrests into higher-tier ones, but there is a restriction. This exchange is locked behind gear milestone achievements. You cannot simply funnel Myth Dawncrests from your main into a fresh alt.
The first milestone is the Adventurer of the Dawn achievement, which requires reaching 237 item level in every armor slot. Each subsequent tier has a matching achievement. This prevents skipping progression entirely, but it does not block you from using surplus crests once you have met the milestone.
Valorstones Are Gone in Midnight Season 1
In The War Within, upgrades required two currencies: Valorstones and seasonal crests. Running low on one while sitting on a pile of the other was a constant frustration. Blizzard removed Valorstones entirely for Midnight Season 1.
The change makes the gearing loop more straightforward. You farm the content that matches your current gear level, collect the matching Dawncrests, and spend them on upgrades. No secondary currency to track, no getting blocked by a resource you forgot to farm.
