World of Warcraft Midnight Patch 12.2: Eclipse and Season 3 Everything We Know

World of Warcraft: Midnight is heading toward another major content update, and Blizzard has revealed a large part of what players can expect from Patch 12.2 and Season 3. The next stage of Midnight will introduce a completely new zone, additional dungeon and raid content, a new Mythic+ season, more challenging Prey encounters, new Delve content, transmog changes and a new standalone game mode called Talebound. Together, these additions are designed to push the story toward its next major confrontation while giving players several different ways to progress their characters.

The Mantle Vault Becomes the Next Major Zone

One of the biggest additions coming with Patch 12.2 is the Mantle Vault, an ancient Titan structure located deep beneath Azeroth. The zone will become an important part of the ongoing conflict against the Void and the Devouring Host, eventually leading players toward the events surrounding the final stages of Midnight.

The Mantle Vault is intended to feel different from the other underground environments players have already explored. Blizzard has described it as a massive Titan space, with enormous structures and a visual style inspired by locations such as Ulduar and Uldir. The environment will also make heavy use of lighting and the presence of the Worldsoul to create a distinctive atmosphere.

The zone will include the usual mixture of campaign quests, side quests, rares and treasures, but Blizzard is also adding smaller secrets throughout the area. The developers have indicated that players should expect the Mantle Vault to contain more than simply another questing zone, with environmental storytelling and discoveries playing an important role.

The inhabitants of the Mantle Vault will also expand the worldbuilding surrounding the underground regions of Azeroth. Thraegar and other Crystallized Earthen will become allies, while the Deepscar will introduce several underground races, including kobolds, drogbar, troggs and other creatures. The Niffin associated with this group will also play an important role in the stories taking place inside the zone.

Thraegar's Stand Joins the Dungeon Pool

Patch 12.2 will introduce Thraegar's Stand, a new dungeon connected to the Mantle Vault. Players will enter the dungeon to confront the chaotic threats emerging from the ancient Titan complex.

Thraegar's Stand will become part of the Season 3 Mythic+ rotation alongside returning dungeons. The Season 3 dungeon lineup includes Thraegar's Stand, Underrot, Iron Docks, Sanguine Depths, The Stonecore, Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr, Magister's Terrace and Maisara Caverns.

Uldaman is also receiving an adjustment, with the dungeon featuring four bosses after the Lost Vikings encounter is removed.

A New Gearhold Lair Boss

Season 3 will also add a new one-boss lair encounter in Gearhold. The boss is Noctinaxx, a giant Azerite bat, and Blizzard has stated that the difficulty of the Patch 12.2 lair is being targeted around the level of an early Mythic raid boss.

Azerite will have a role in the encounter and in the surrounding gameplay. Blizzard has also teased a new way for players to interact with Azerite during Patch 12.2, with the resource becoming part of how characters can play and develop during the new content.

Mythic+ Season 3 Brings Spec-Based Achievements

One of the most significant changes for Mythic+ players is the introduction of a new top 5% achievement in Season 3. Blizzard is also changing the way the top 1% and top 5% achievements are calculated.

Instead of comparing every specialization against the entire Mythic+ population, these achievements will be based on the individual specialization. This means players who prefer less popular or traditionally off-meta specializations will have their performance measured against other players using the same spec.

The change is intended to encourage greater spec diversity and give players more incentive to play the specialization they actually enjoy instead of feeling that they have to switch to the current meta simply to compete for a high-ranking achievement. The top 0.1% ranking remains overall rather than becoming specialization based.

For players who enjoy pushing Mythic+ but have struggled to compete because of the popularity or performance of their chosen specialization, this could significantly change the competitive environment in Season 3.

New Delves, Prey Content and Astalor

Season 3 will continue expanding Delves and Preys. Valeera will receive new curios and will progress to a maximum level of 100, while Astalor Bloodsworn becomes the new nemesis associated with the Delve system.

Astalor will also influence the atmosphere and enemies encountered throughout the new Delves. Blizzard has confirmed that he is not simply being removed from the story. Instead, his role will involve more complicated developments than simply becoming corrupted and being defeated.

Preys will also receive new updates, including an additional difficulty intended for players who want more challenging open-world content.

Transmog Restrictions Are Changing

Another major system change is coming to transmog. Blizzard plans to remove armor-type restrictions, meaning players will be able to use cosmetic appearances across the traditional cloth, leather, mail and plate boundaries.

Weapon-type and class restrictions will remain, so the system is not becoming completely unrestricted. The change is instead focused on giving players substantially more freedom when creating appearances.

Blizzard explained that the philosophy behind the change is similar to the approach being taken with player customization in other areas of the game. If players want to create unusual or highly personalized appearances, the system should support that creativity rather than preventing it because of traditional armor categories.

The Calibration Chamber Will Help Players Test Builds

The Calibration Chamber is another upcoming feature designed specifically for testing characters. Blizzard is considering several tools that could make it easier to evaluate rotations and damage profiles without requiring players to construct a full raid environment.

The developers are looking at options such as resetting cooldowns, temporary raid buffs and consumables, as well as different enemy arrangements. These could allow players to test single-target damage, cleave, stacked encounters and spread-out combat situations.

The feature is intended as a testing environment rather than another progression system, giving players a dedicated place to experiment with their characters.

Wrath of the Lich King Remix Is Also Coming

The Midnight roadmap also includes another Remix event, this time centered around Wrath of the Lich King. Blizzard has indicated that the event is planned for the summer and will connect thematically with the direction of the broader World Soul Saga.

The upcoming Remix will also serve as another opportunity for players to revisit Northrend before the story eventually moves further toward The Last Titan.

Midnight Is Entering a Major New Phase

Patch 12.2 is shaping up to be much more than a standard content update. The Mantle Vault expands the story, Thraegar's Stand adds another dungeon, Gearhold receives a new lair boss, Season 3 introduces a new Mythic+ structure, Delves and Preys receive additional progression and transmog becomes significantly more flexible.

At the same time, the story is moving toward the final confrontation of Midnight. The Worldcore will eventually take players into the heart of Azeroth's Worldsoul, while Xal'atath's campaign reaches its most dangerous stage.

For players preparing for the next phase of Midnight, this means there will be plenty of reasons to continue gearing characters, improving Mythic+ performance, collecting appearances and preparing for the final raid.
