WoW Midnight Season 2 Gearing Guide

If you're starting WoW Midnight Season 2 and trying to figure out where your next upgrade should come from, the gearing system is much easier to understand once you know how the gear tracks work.

Season 2 introduces Mistcrests as the main upgrade currency, replacing the Dawncrest system used previously. The familiar five main gear tracks remain: Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero and Myth.

The biggest change is that Valorstones are gone. Gear upgrades now use Mistcrests together with gold, which makes the system a little simpler while putting more importance on your upgrade path and Warband-wide progression.

Season 2 also raises the top end of the gearing system. Standard Myth gear can reach item level 334 at 6/6, while special loot from the final bosses of The Venomous Abyss and Very Rare items can reach item level 344, effectively matching Myth 9-level gear.

The item level ranges overlap between tracks. That's intentional. It means you can move into harder content without needing to replace every item immediately.

What Changed in Midnight Season 2?

The basic idea behind gearing remains familiar, but Blizzard has simplified several parts of the upgrade system.

Previously, upgrading gear required both Crests and Valorstones. In Midnight, Valorstones have been removed and gold is used alongside Mistcrests instead.

For example, upgrading a Champion item can require gold rather than the secondary currency that players had to manage in previous expansions.

The five main Mistcrest types correspond directly to the five upgrade tracks:

Each track has six upgrade levels. The Mistcrest cost increases as you move through the ranks, although several discount systems can significantly reduce the cost.

How Mistcrest Upgrades Work

Mistcrests are tied to the gear track you're upgrading. Adventurer gear uses Adventurer Mistcrests, Champion gear uses Champion Mistcrests, and so on.

This makes the system much easier to follow when you're working on a new character. Instead of trying to figure out which currency belongs to which piece of gear, the name of the Mistcrest tells you exactly where it fits.

The upgrade cost also increases with each rank. Each additional upgrade level costs more Mistcrests than the previous one, although Blizzard has added several ways to reduce those costs.

One of the most important systems is the upgrade discount shared across your Warband.

Midnight Gear Upgrade Discounts

Players who gear multiple characters will benefit heavily from the new upgrade achievement system.

When your character reaches a certain average item level threshold, you unlock an achievement associated with that gear track. That achievement then provides a Mistcrest discount when upgrading the same track on your other characters.

Here are the important thresholds:

Achievement

Requirement

Adventurer of the Mist

282 in every armor slot

Veteran of the Mist

295 in every armor slot

Champion of the Mist

308 in every armor slot

Hero of the Mist

321 in every armor slot

Myth of the Mist

331 average item level

For the first four tracks, reaching the maximum item level in every armor slot unlocks the associated achievement. The Myth achievement uses a 331 average item level requirement.

The result is a much smoother alt gearing experience. Your main character effectively unlocks cheaper upgrades for your other characters as you progress.

Gear Slot Upgrade Discounts

There is also another discount system that benefits your main character.

Once you've upgraded an item in a particular gear slot to a certain level, bringing another item in a different slot to that same upgrade level becomes cheaper.

For example, imagine you upgrade your chest to Champion 4/6. If you later replace your helmet with another Champion item, you won't have to pay the full cost to bring that helmet to the same upgrade level.

This encourages players to upgrade their gear evenly instead of putting all their Mistcrests into one or two pieces.

For most players, keeping your gear slots around the same upgrade level is going to be the most efficient way to increase overall item level.

Where to Get Gear in WoW Midnight Season 2

Knowing the gear tracks is only half the battle. The next question is where you actually get each level of gear.

Here's a quick breakdown of the main sources.

Because the item level ranges overlap, you don't need to jump directly from one difficulty to another.

For example, a player moving from Veteran into Champion gear can gradually build a stronger set through Normal raids, low Mythic+ keys and higher-tier Delves before pushing into Hero-level content.

The Venomous Abyss Season 2 Raid

The Venomous Abyss is the main Season 2 raid and one of the most important sources of high-end gear.

The raid contains eight bosses and introduces the Season 2 Tier Set. Certain bosses are especially important if you're looking for specific Tier pieces.

The final two bosses are also important because their loot can reach the higher Very Rare item level range.

Midnight Season 2 Great Vault Rewards

The Great Vault is getting a major upgrade in Season 2, especially for players who raid.

Raid Vault rewards now sit above the normal item level of the corresponding raid difficulty. That means completing raid content can give you access to gear from a higher upgrade track through your weekly Vault.

305, Hero 1/6

Heroic

318, Myth 1/6

Mythic

334, Myth 6/6

Mythic Very Rare / Final Two Bosses

The jump is particularly noticeable at higher difficulties.

LFR, Normal and Heroic raid Vault rewards move one complete gear track above the standard raid drops, while Mythic raid Vault rewards can reach Myth 6/6.

This makes the weekly Great Vault one of the most important parts of the Midnight Season 2 gearing loop.

How to Gear Faster in Midnight Season 2

If you're starting Season 2 from a lower item level, don't worry about immediately jumping into the hardest content.

A practical gearing path looks something like this:

Start with outdoor content and Delves. Use Adventurer and Veteran gear to fill weak slots and begin collecting the appropriate Mistcrests.

Move into Champion gear. Normal raids, Mythic+ 2-3 and higher-tier Delves are good ways to build your first serious endgame set.

Push toward Hero gear. Once your character is comfortably equipped, Heroic raids and Mythic+ 4-8 become the main sources of upgrades.

Finish with Myth gear. Mythic raids, Mythic+ 9 and other high-end activities provide access to the Myth track and the highest standard gear upgrades.

Don't ignore the Great Vault. Your weekly Vault can provide a substantial upgrade over normal raid loot, so completing the appropriate weekly activities is worth prioritizing.

WoW Midnight Season 2 Release and Gearing Schedule

Season 2 content is being introduced over several weekly resets rather than appearing all at once.

September 1

September 8

The important date for most players is August 18, when the full Season 2 gearing cycle begins with Mythic+, the main raid difficulties, Bountiful Delves and the new Great Vault rewards.

What Is the Best Way to Gear in WoW Midnight Season 2?

There isn't one single gearing path that works for every player.

Raiders should prioritize The Venomous Abyss and their weekly Great Vault. Mythic+ players can push through the Champion and Hero tracks before moving into Myth gear through higher keys. Delve players have their own progression path, with higher tiers providing access to increasingly powerful gear.

The important thing is to understand the relationship between gear tracks, Mistcrests and content difficulty.

Once you know that Champion leads into Hero, Hero leads into Myth, and each track has its own Mistcrest, the entire Midnight gearing system becomes much easier to navigate.

For players with multiple characters, the upgrade achievements are arguably just as important as the gear itself. Your main can unlock significant Mistcrest discounts for alts, making it much faster to bring additional characters into Season 2 endgame content.

WoW Midnight Season 2 Gearing Quick Summary

  • Mistcrests replace the previous Crest system, with five types covering Adventurer through Myth gear.

  • Valorstones have been removed, with gold used as part of the upgrade system.

  • Standard Myth gear reaches item level 334 at 6/6.

  • Very Rare Season 2 loot can reach item level 344, equivalent to Myth 9-level gear.

  • The Venomous Abyss is the main Season 2 raid and contains the new Tier Set.

  • Great Vault raid rewards are substantially stronger, with LFR through Heroic rewards jumping to higher gear tracks.

  • Upgrade achievements unlock discounts for alts across your Warband.

  • Slot-based upgrade discounts make replacing gear cheaper when you have already upgraded another slot to the same level.

  • Season 2 starts August 18, with additional LFR wings opening during the following weeks.

If you're planning your Midnight Season 2 character, the simplest approach is to upgrade evenly, save your Mistcrests for meaningful item-level increases, complete your weekly Great Vault activities and use your main's upgrade achievements to accelerate your alts.
