WoW Season 2 Bonus Roll Questline: Start This Week
The WoW Season 2 bonus roll questline is now available, and it is worth starting as soon as possible. The important part is not the amount of work involved. The questline is fairly short. The important part is the eight week research timer that begins once you start the chain.
Nebulous Voidcores cannot be purchased directly until Week 8, but you can start the questline now and get that timer running. If you wait, you are simply giving up potential bonus rolls later in the season.
The chain sends you between two NPCs, Decimus in Voidstorm and Orin Straylight near the Catalyst in Silvermoon. Once you know where to go, the whole process is straightforward.
How to Start the WoW Season 2 Bonus Roll Questline

Step 1: Pick Up In the Catalyst's Shadow From Decimus
Head to Voidstorm and look for Decimus. Players who completed the Season 1 bonus roll quests may recognize him from the previous system.
Decimus now gives you In the Catalyst's Shadow, which serves as the introduction to the Season 2 version of the Voidforge system.
The quest sends you to the next NPC, so there is no complicated objective or special farming requirement at this stage.
Step 2: Find Orin Straylight in Silvermoon
Take In the Catalyst's Shadow to Orin Straylight, who can be found near the Catalyst in Silvermoon.
Orin takes over the bonus roll research for Season 2. Speaking with him unlocks the next quest, Prismatic Potential.
This is where the actual collection requirement begins.
Prismatic Potential: Collect 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards
The Prismatic Potential quest requires you to collect 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards.
The good news is that there is no special farming route you need to follow. The shards come from regular Season 2 endgame activities, including:
Season 2 raid bosses
Mythic+ dungeons
Bountiful Delves
Nightmare Prey Hunts
In other words, most players will collect these while doing their normal weekly content.
If you are already running raids, Mythic+, Delves or Nightmare Prey Hunts for your Great Vault, there is no reason to completely change your routine just for this quest.
WoW Season 2 Bonus Roll Questline Quick Guide
Step | Quest | Quest Giver | Location | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | In the Catalyst's Shadow | Decimus | Voidstorm | Speak with Orin Straylight |
2 | Prismatic Potential | Orin Straylight | Catalyst, Silvermoon | Collect 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards |
Once you have completed the collection requirement, the Season 2 bonus roll system continues its progression toward the weekly Nebulous Voidcore reward.
Why You Should Start the Questline Now
The biggest reason to complete the introduction early is the eight week research timer.
Orin needs eight weeks of research before the system begins providing an additional Voidcore automatically each week. The timer only starts after you begin the questline.
That means completing the introductory quests now is more important than rushing to finish every part of the system immediately.
If you start this week, you have the maximum amount of time for the research to progress. If you wait several weeks, you also delay the point at which the additional weekly Voidcore becomes available.
There is very little downside to starting early, especially because the required shards come from content many players are already completing.
How Nebulous Voidcores Fit Into Season 2 Gearing
Nebulous Voidcores are part of the broader Season 2 gearing system and give players another way to obtain bonus rolls as the season progresses.
The Great Vault can already provide Nebulous Voidcores from the beginning of the season, while the bonus roll questline adds another source later on.
This makes the questline particularly useful for players trying to maximize their gearing opportunities throughout the season.
Bonus rolls are also more valuable because their rewards scale with the difficulty of the content you completed. Instead of being tied purely to a boss's normal loot table, the system can provide gear at the appropriate Great Vault item level for the activity.
For players progressing through Heroic raids, Mythic+ or other high-level Season 2 content, that can make a bonus roll considerably more useful than it might initially appear.
Do You Need to Farm Elementary Voidcore Shards?
Not necessarily.
The best approach is to treat Elementary Voidcore Shards as a passive reward from your normal weekly activities.
If you are already doing:
Raid bosses
Mythic+ keys
Bountiful Delves
Nightmare Prey Hunts
you should naturally be working toward the 10 shards required for Prismatic Potential.
There is no reason to create an entirely separate farming routine unless you are specifically trying to finish the quest as quickly as possible.
What to Do This Week
The process is simple:
Go to Voidstorm and pick up In the Catalyst's Shadow from Decimus.
Travel to the Catalyst in Silvermoon and speak with Orin Straylight.
Accept Prismatic Potential.
Collect 10 Elementary Voidcore Shards through normal Season 2 content.
Continue completing your weekly endgame activities while Orin's eight week research timer progresses.
Keep an eye on your Great Vault for Nebulous Voidcore rewards.
There is no special class, build, group or complicated farming strategy required.
WoW Season 2 Bonus Rolls: The Bottom Line
The WoW Season 2 bonus roll questline is one of those systems that is much easier to start than it is to catch up on later.
The opening quests only take a few minutes, while the research system takes eight weeks to reach its full weekly reward. That makes starting the questline early the most important part.
Pick up In the Catalyst's Shadow from Decimus in Voidstorm, take it to Orin Straylight in Silvermoon, and begin working on Prismatic Potential. After that, your normal Season 2 activities should handle most of the remaining work.
If you are already raiding, running Mythic+ or completing Delves each week, there is little reason to delay. Start the questline now and let the timer work in the background while you gear up.
