MapleStory Classic Thief Guide: Level 1-30 Build & Leveling

Thieves train under the Dark Lord beneath Kerning City, and in MapleStory Classic World the fastest way through levels 10 to 30 is a Lucky Seven build. It works for future Assassins and future Bandits alike. Many Bandits play as Sindits, meaning they level with Lucky Seven and then move their first-job SP into dagger skills after second job using an SP reset.

This guide covers accuracy, the exact AP and SP order, gear for each level range, potions, the best training maps, and the level 30 choice between Assassin and Bandit. If you are still on Maple Island, read our MapleStory Classic beginner's guide first and come back once you reach Kerning City.

Strengths and drawbacks

What the Thief does well

  • Lucky Seven has innate mastery and long range, and you can cast it while jumping.

  • Ranged attacks make it easy to steal kills on busy maps.

  • LUK and Nimble Body give you high evasion.

What holds it back

  • There is no realistic mobbing skill until third job.

  • Claws still punch at close range in Classic World, so you must stand further from monsters than you expect.

  • Better throwing stars are expensive, and Tobis and Steelys are out of reach early.

  • Scrolled claws will probably be very costly in the Free Market.

How Thief accuracy works

A missed attack still costs MP and stars, and early on you cannot afford to waste either. That makes accuracy the first thing to understand.

Base Accuracy = floor((1.2 x total DEX + 2 x level + 0.6 x total LUK) x 0.25 + 15)

Total Accuracy is Base Accuracy plus direct Accuracy from Nimble Body, gear, or potions. Each level adds 0.5 Base ACC, each DEX adds 0.30, each LUK adds 0.15, and each point of direct Accuracy adds 1.00 to the total.

DEX is not your only Accuracy stat. Level and LUK raise it too, and maxed Nimble Body adds 15 flat. Every monster also has an Avoidability value, and fighting monsters above your level reduces the value of your Accuracy before that check happens:

  • L = max(0, monster level minus your level)

  • A = total Accuracy x 100 / (10 x L + 255)

  • D = A minus the monster's Avoidability

A map that feels bad at level 20 can become fine at level 25 with no change to your stats, because the level gap shrinks.

Levels 1-10: Beginner to Thief

Follow the Maple Island quests to level 10, take the ship to Victoria Island, and find the Dark Lord beneath the Fusion Jazz Bar in Kerning City. Classic World removed every stat requirement for first job, so you do not need any DEX to advance.

Beginner skills. You earn 9 Beginner SP by level 10, enough for Three Snails 3, Recovery 3, and Nimble Feet 3. Three Snails is a ranged shell attack, Recovery gives short HP regeneration, and Nimble Feet is a short Speed buff. The order does not matter.

Weapons. Use the Club through level 4, then switch to the Razor at level 5. The Club has the best chance of landing hits on early Maple Island monsters, and the Razor is better once you can equip it. After the job change, equip Beginner's Garnier and Subi Throwing-Stars.

AP for levels 1-10. The sample build starts at 4 STR, 5 DEX, 4 INT, and 12 LUK, with the 25 starting AP already spent. Put all 5 AP from each of levels 2 to 10 into LUK. Base LUK goes 17, 22, 27, 32, 37, 42, 47, 52, and ends at 57 on level 10, for 70 total AP.

Level 10 sample build. Base stats are 4 STR, 5 DEX, 4 INT, 57 LUK. With gear that becomes 60 LUK, 25 total W.ATK, and 30 ACC. Skills are Lucky Seven 1 plus Three Snails, Recovery, and Nimble Feet at 3. Gear is Beginner's Garnier, Subi Throwing-Stars, Black Ghetto Beanie, Black Cloth Vest, Black Cloth Pants, and Blue Gidder Shoes. Dr. Faymus sells Subis, and Don Hwang in Kerning City sells the level 10 Thief armor.

The best guaranteed Lucky Seven targets at this stage are Blue Snails (100% hit, dies in 1 cast, 4 EXP per cast) and Red Snails (100% hit, dies in 2 casts, 4 EXP per cast).

Levels 10-30: skills and leveling

Put your first point into Lucky Seven at level 10. Add one point of Keen Eyes early for +50 range, then max Lucky Seven before finishing range and Accuracy.

Kerning City citizenship at level 12

Kerning City is the best citizenship for a Thief. It opens at level 12, so sign up at the Kerning City Civic Center right away and start building contribution.

At level 22 and the Helpful Stranger grade, Max sells Wolbi Throwing-Stars with +17 W.ATK for 1,000 mesos. Helpful Stranger is the third grade and needs 2,000 contribution, which the Kerning City board awards over about two weeks of dailies and weekly donations. Later grades add Overall Armor LUK Scroll: Lesser and Gloves Attack Scroll: Lesser, and discounts apply to eligible prices in your active town.

Second-job SP cannot go into first-job skills, so finish the first-job plan by level 30. The Character Builder flags any build that breaks this. The order above is for Assassins and Sindits. A true dagger Bandit can spend on Dark Sight and Double Stab instead.

AP order

Raise DEX only when your next claw needs it, then put everything else into LUK. The clean sample uses 15 base DEX for Steel Titans, 20 for Steel Igor, 25 for Meba, and 30 for Adamantium Guards. DEX from equipment can lower the base DEX you need if that gear is already on. An item's own stats cannot satisfy its requirement, so you must meet a claw's DEX and LUK requirements before equipping it.

Why every Thief should level with Lucky Seven

Maxed Lucky Seven hits twice for 140% each at 16 MP and two stars, and maxed Keen Eyes stretches your range to 400 px. That extra distance keeps you safer and lets you farm Stirges efficiently. For future Assassins and Bandits alike, it is the clear choice for levels 10 to 30.

Future Bandits should level as Sindits. Keep Lucky Seven through first job, put your first Bandit SP into Haste, and keep using Lucky Seven while Savage Blow grows. The live SP Reset price is not confirmed yet.

A true dagger Bandit can max Double Stab instead, finishing first job with Double Stab 20, Nimble Body 15, Disorder 6, and Dark Sight 20. That gives up Lucky Seven and Keen Eyes, so levels 10 to 30 are slower and fully melee. The other route is to level as a Sindit, become a Bandit, and reset first-job SP right away or once Savage Blow is ready, removing Lucky Seven and Keen Eyes to finish Double Stab and Dark Sight.

How Thief stats affect damage

LUK is the main damage stat. DEX and STR share a smaller secondary term, and they often matter mostly because weapons require them.

  • Claws need LUK and DEX for later upgrades. STR adds a little damage but is not a claw requirement.

  • DEX daggers require LUK and DEX.

  • STR daggers require LUK and STR. The STR is there to meet the requirement and does not beat LUK for damage per AP.

Physical damage before defense:

  • MAX = (1.0 + (LUK x W + STR + DEX) / 100 + Attack Power / 50) x total W.ATK x skill %

  • MIN = (0.8 + (LUK x W x Mastery + STR + DEX) / 100 + Attack Power / 50) x total W.ATK x skill %

Lucky Seven forces W to 3.0 and Mastery to 0.5, and its total W.ATK includes both the claw and the throwing star. Double Stab uses the dagger stab multiplier, so W is 2.0. For Lucky Seven, one LUK adds 125% more average raw stat damage than one STR or DEX. For Double Stab without Dagger Mastery the edge is about 8%, and max Dagger Mastery widens it to about 88%.

Do not add STR for a STR dagger unless the weapon is worth the lost LUK, and check the exact requirement in the Character Builder first. Reef Claw is the strongest clean level 30 dagger, uses DEX, and has no STR requirement.

Best equipment for levels 10-30

Upgrade your weapon first. Lucky Seven adds claw W.ATK and star W.ATK together, so both matter. Armor mainly provides useful stats and helps you survive contact damage.

Meba vs Adamantium Guards

Meba is the only Speed 3 claw between levels 10 and 30. Adamantium Guards has 4 more W.ATK and +1% Critical Damage, but its Speed 4 animation gives Meba room to compete. These results use the level 30 sample build, Wolbi stars, maxed Lucky Seven, and a target with 0 WDEF. A fully scrolled claw here has seven successful Claw Attack Scroll: Lesser, adding 7 W.ATK at 100% success.

Meba performs far better than its 19 W.ATK suggests. Clean Adamantium Guards deals only 2.7% more DPS, and with seven Lesser scrolls on both claws the lead shrinks to 0.9%. Adamantium Guards still wins on damage per cast and per MP, so it is the better pick when each hit matters more than attack speed. Do not scroll both claws unless scrolls are cheap. Meba is strong enough to keep at level 30, while Adamantium Guards saves more MP and is the better base for heavy scrolling.

Daggers and shields

Daggers are one-handed, so a dagger Thief can wear a shield. Claws cannot. Guard fully blocks eligible physical hits, and its chance depends on the shield's own WDEF.

  • Pan Lid: 44 WDEF and 8.1% Guard before scrolling, no stat requirement.

  • Nimble Wristguard: 54 WDEF and 9.7% Guard before scrolling.

  • Jurgen Wristguard: 54 WDEF, +1 DEX, and 9.7% Guard before scrolling.

Shield WDEF scrolls raise both defense and Guard chance. The Wristguards require 12 DEX and 34 LUK.

W.ATK or Critical Rate on gloves?

For the level 30 Lucky Seven sample, five successful Lesser glove scrolls give these results:

  • Five Gloves Attack Scroll: Lesser: total W.ATK goes from 40 to 45, for about 12.5% more expected Lucky Seven damage.

  • Five Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll: Lesser: Critical Rate goes from 7% to 12%, for about 1.0% more expected damage.

Pick W.ATK. The five-scroll Attack setup deals about 11.3% more expected damage than the Critical Rate setup, and it also raises your weakest hit, which helps guarantee one-cast and two-cast kills.

Gender and Thief overalls

At level 30, male characters can earn the Blue Sauna Robe and female characters the Red Sauna Robe from Mr. Wetbottom's quest chain in Sleepywood. Both give +1 STR, DEX, INT, and LUK with 10 scroll slots. Lesser Overall LUK scrolls add +1 LUK at 100%, and Intermediate scrolls add +2 LUK at 60%. Tops and bottoms have no STR, DEX, INT, or LUK scrolls, so a 10-slot overall is much easier to build for damage.

Female Thieves get a stronger class overall at level 35. The Dark Avenger starts with +6 LUK and 10 slots, while a Sauna Robe starts with +1 LUK. Male Thieves have no equivalent at that level.

Best training maps for levels 10-30

MeowDB's Training Advisor (called Recommended Training in the Character Builder) ranks monsters and maps by EXP per hit or cast for a specific build. Every level 15 to 30 row below has a 100% hit rate, and every listed spawn dies within two Lucky Seven casts even at the build's weakest possible damage. The level 10 build has no Victoria Island map where every spawn passes that check, so its row shows the two best safe maps and the extra casts they need.

"Weakest damage" means the lowest hit your build can roll. A guaranteed 2-cast means two unlucky casts still kill the monster, and normal or high rolls may kill it sooner.

The EXP numbers are Advisor estimates for each row's sample build. They use current spawn data and apply a smaller danger penalty to ranged classes, so real results shift with movement, crowding, looting, and your gear. Stirges are included because Lucky Seven hits flying monsters efficiently.

Expect heavy traffic at the Kerning subway Stirge maps. They were by far the most popular Lucky Seven spots in COT2, and Transfer Area also tops the Advisor at levels 20, 25, and 30, so crowding and kill stealing can erase its EXP lead.

Refill time can change the best map. Transfer Area sits next to Kerning City, so potions and star recharges are close. The Ellinia tree dungeons are a longer walk from Ellinia, Damp Forest is near Sleepywood, and Dangerous Steam is farther inside the dungeon. A small EXP lead disappears fast if every refill needs a long trip.

Level 30 sample build

Base stats are 4 STR, 30 DEX, 4 INT, and 132 LUK. With gear that becomes 5 STR, 34 DEX, 5 INT, 139 LUK, 40 total W.ATK, and 77 ACC. Skills are Nimble Body 15, Keen Eyes 15, Disorder 3, Dark Sight 8, and Lucky Seven 20. Gear is Adamantium Guards, Wolbi Throwing-Stars, Dark Guise, Steel Sylvia, Sauna Robe, Bronze Chain Boots, and Old Raggedy Cape.

After second job you have 1,134 base HP and 953 base MP before equipment. Lucky Seven deals 366 to 622 per cast against an equal-level target with 0 WDEF, averaging about 502 once the sample's 7% Critical Rate and 21% Critical Damage are counted.

The best guaranteed Lucky Seven targets here are Jr. Necki (100% hit, dies in 1 cast, 39 EXP per cast) and Stirge (100% hit, dies in 1 cast, 37 EXP per cast).

One Subi or Wolbi stack holds 500 stars, enough for 250 Lucky Seven casts. At skill level 20 those casts also consume 4,000 MP. Carry several stacks and a nearest-town scroll so you never run dry mid-map.

Common Thief mistakes

  1. Adding DEX for first-job advancement. Classic World removed the requirement, so add DEX only when your next claw or armor needs it.

  2. Building Double Stab without committing to true dagger leveling. Lucky Seven is easier for future Bandits, and Double Stab belongs to the no-reset, max-Dark-Sight route.

  3. Adding DEX without checking your gear. Meet the weapon requirement using total stats from other equipped items, then put the rest into LUK.

  4. Buying rare stars before the basics. Get a current claw and enough MP food first, and carry several rechargeable stacks before buying expensive stars.

  5. Forgetting refill time. A top map is a poor fit if it is far from potions and star recharge shops.

  6. Standing inside claw punch range. Your claw punches at close range by design, and a jump attack carries you back out of it.

  7. Picking a male character when you wanted the level 35 overall. Only female Thieves get the Dark Avenger with +6 LUK and 10 upgrade slots.

Choosing your second job at level 30

Return to the Dark Lord in Kerning City, pass the advancement test, and choose Assassin or Bandit. Your first-job AP and SP stay with you.

Assassin. The direct ranged continuation. Keep Lucky Seven, add Claw Mastery and Critical Throw, then build Haste, Critical Recovery, and Claw Booster.

Bandit. Put your first Bandit SP into Haste. A Sindit keeps Lucky Seven while Savage Blow grows, and once Savage Blow is ready you reset Lucky Seven and Keen Eyes into Double Stab and max Dark Sight.

Skip the grind
